Australia survive almighty Fiji scare to stay unbeaten at Rugby League World Cup

Tom Trbojevic delivered three tries as Australia secured an unconvincing 36-22 victory over Fiji.
Semi Valemei also crossed for three tries as the Fijians touched down four times in Brisbane.

Critics have often dismissed this increasingly domestic-focused sport and its sometimes lopsided, occasionally laughable World Cup. Yet against tournament favorites and hosts Australia, the Fiji Bati demonstrated—from the emotional tears during their anthem and the stirring pre-match hymn, through 80 minutes of fearless attacking and defensive effort—why this competition deserves continued support.

The inspiring Fijian side appeared to have an answer for every criticism, a response to every question, except three. The depth of Australia’s bench, the class of James Tedesco, and the finishing ability of hat-trick scorer Tom Trbojevic ultimately overwhelmed the plucky underdogs, witnessed by a strong Sunday night crowd in Brisbane and undoubtedly millions on prime-time television.
